TALK: Numerical and Symbolic Scientific Computing in Linz:
A Personal Report

Peter Paule

Research Institute for Symbolic Computation (RISC),

Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria.

Abstract: Starting in 1998 a special research program (SFB) on "Numerical and Symbolic Scientific Computing" has been established at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz. The overal goal for its total duration (1998-2008) was to connect local expertise from two quite different worlds: numerical analysis and symbolic computation. For five years (2003-2008) the speaker has been director of this enterprise; currently he is head of a successor program, the Doctoral Program "Computational Mathematics".

The talk gives a personal account of various aspects and experiences gained in the SFB project. Mathematical examples are presented from symbolic computation point of view: they range from combinatorics and number theory to applications in finite element methods and quantum field theory.
